Description
Variegated String of Pearls Senecio rollqwleyanus
Variegated String of Pearls is a well loved wishlist item for all plant collectors. It’s known for its pearl like leaves that are swirled in cream, green, and sometimes even pink and purple colors with the right combination of sun stress and water. The thin, string-like stems trail elegantly and can cascade several feet.
It’s a perfect gift for yourself, your family, and all your loved ones with its fascinating look and elegant features. It is more vibrant and striking than actual pearls!
The plant is beautiful in a hanging basket, and can be grown inside the house in a bright airy room, or outside in a protected patio. The plant will purify the air, cleaning up the atmosphere around wherever it is situated. You will need to provide protection from frost.
Variegated String of Pearls is slower growing in comparison to its non-variegated counterpart, due to lacking some of the chlorophyll that completely green leaves possess.
Botanical name: Senecio rowleyanus Variegata or Curio rowleyanus Variegata
Care Tips
Light: Indirect light, shade, or early morning sun. They are more sensitive to direct sunlight as the variegated parts lack the chlorophyll to process it. Direct sunlight would cause sunburn easily.
Water: Only when potting mix is dry to touch. Needs regular infrequent watering in summer and much less in winter
Soil: Well draining succulents potting mix
Temperature: The optimal temperature range is from 65F to 90F during the day. At night keep the temperature above 40F
Planting: String of Pearls does best in places where its strings are able to hang or form ground cover. Baskets are perfect for letting the impressive strings grow and trail. Garden walls and rockeries also allow this plant to spread and thrive.
Fertilizer: Use a general fertilizer twice a year to enhance new growth and the plant’s overall health. Over fertilizing causes malformed growth.
Blooming: The flowers are dainty and white, and form tightly compacted puffballs. Each bloom has a halo of deep red to golden yellow filaments.
Dormancy: Variegated String of Pearls don’t go into full dormancy, but growth slows during winter months.
Propagation: String of Pearls propagates via clippings. Allow the cut end to callous over and insert into dirt during warm months. Roots sprout from the leaf nodes.

To ensure the health of succulents, it is important to plant them in porous, well-draining soil. Succulents require little watering, but don’t like to sit in wet soil. To create an adequate cactus mix, simply add pumice, perlite, or grit to cactus soil to provide the proper drainage.
Make sure to leave drought periods between waterings to prevent the plant from water-logging.
