Before planting, the seeds need to be germinated first. Here’s a tip on how to do this.

Rose seeds need cold temperatures to initiate the germination process, so place the seeds in a plastic bag in the veggie crisper drawer of your fridge for about 60 days. Mark your calendar so you know when it’s time to take them out

Size: 3-4 Feet Tall, 3 Feet Wide

Hardiness Zones: 3-11

Instructions

1. Planting your seeds

When you think your seeds are ready for planting (6-10 weeks), remove the bag from the refrigerator if that was your stratification method. You will need shallow trays or small pots to plant your seeds. Whatever works between the trays and pots is fine as long they have good drainage. The ideal size of the trays or pots should be 3-4 inches deep.

You can use separate trays when planting seeds from different varieties of rose hips. You must follow your labeling all the way down from harvesting, treatment, and planting. The rose bush name and planting date are some of the details to indicate on your trays or pots.

2. Fill the planting tray with high-quality commercial potting soil. A mix created especially for seedlings is preferable.

3 .Place the rose seeds in the tray and cover them with about 1/2 inch of potting soil. Rose seeds should be planted in late winter, about six weeks before the last frost of the season.

4. Spray the soil lightly with a mister. Slide the planting tray into a large, clear plastic bag and seal the opening with a twist tie.

Keep the soil pots or trays watered but not soggy. Do not let them dry up as this might affect the germination of your seeds.

5. Put the tray in a warm place that gets indirect light. Although you may not have to water the tray while it’s in the greenhouse atmosphere of the plastic bag, it should be checked periodically. If the soil appears dry, remove the tray and spray the soil lightly, then return the tray to the bag.

6. Watch for seedlings to emerge and roots to develop. When they do, take the tray out of the plastic bag. This will take approximately 15 to 20 days. Move the tray to a sunny window and keep the seedlings moist.

6. Planting your seedlings

When the seedlings are grown a few inches tall with at least three true leaves, they are ready to be transplanted.

Transplant the seedlings to small pots when it appears that they are beginning to outgrow the planting tray (You can transplant them into a four-inch pot of your liking.) . After the danger of frost has passed, plant the seedlings outside in a location that gets full sun for most of the day
